ABSTRACT

Cyber-enabled relational fraud encompassing romance scams, cryptocurrency investment scams,

and hybrid schemes commonly known as pig butchering scams (sha zhu pan) has emerged as one

of the most psychologically devastating categories of online crime. Unlike conventional financial

fraud, these schemes involve the deliberate cultivation of emotional trust and intimate attachment

as preconditions for exploitation, resulting in harm that extends well beyond monetary loss. Victims

frequently experience significant psychological sequelae, including grief, shame, identity disruption,

betrayal trauma, and social withdrawal. Despite the severity of these impacts, existing victim services

have been largely oriented toward financial recovery and fraud reporting, with comparatively little

attention to emotional and psychological rehabilitation.

This paper introduces the Digital Betrayal Recovery Model (DBRM), a trauma-informed framework

designed to guide recovery among individuals who have experienced cyber-enabled relational

fraud victimization. The DBRM integrates trauma-informed care principles, grief theory, cognitivebehavioral

approaches, peer support, and psychoeducation to address the complex psychological

consequences of trust-based digital exploitation. Preliminary facilitator observations and participant

feedback suggest that structured peer support reduces shame, restores social connection, and

increases resilience against future victimization. Implications for clinical practice, victim services,

and professional training are discussed.

The low estimate for 2023 by the FBI was that 10.5 million Americans were victimized by cybercriminals and lost a low estimate of $4.5 billion of their wealth. The EPOCH TIMES reported the Chinese Communist Party as complicit in sponsoring all of the EVIL SCAMMERS throughout the world and stealing TRILLIONS from US Citizens! Unfortunately, I am one of those Americans who personally had $575,000 stolen by the evil crypto-criminal syndicate.

The Cyber Crime Survivors Advisory & Recovery Podcast can potentially change people's lives by listening to my story and providing valuable insights and knowledge. I aim to empower cybercrime victims to transform into survivors by learning what leads to personal growth. This podcast is the only one on the web providing this critical information and insight. I don't want anyone else to go through what I went through in the late summer of 2023.
